There are no reported cases of swine flu in Round Rock ISD, although there are now multiple confirmed cases of swine flu in Texas. Flu vaccines administered in fall/winter 2008 do not protect against swine flu, and there is not a human vaccine for the illness. Therefore, there is the potential for swine flu to spread rapidly because of the lack of immunity to the illness. This is not the avian flu that has a high fatality rate in other countries.
As is the practice of RRISD Health Services throughout the school year, campus nurses are vigilant in assessing and monitoring all illnesses, reporting diagnosed flu and flu-like illness trends weekly to the state health department. In addition, campus nurses will report any increase in illnesses to RRISD Central Administration.
Due to our population density, school district communities are susceptible to the spread of illness. We ask you to be more conscious of your health habits and those of your family members in the coming weeks. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, and cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze. Utilize a waterless hand washing product if and when you are unable to access hand washing facilities.
Keep your hands away from your mouth, eyes and nose. If you cough or sneeze into a tissue, deposit it in a trash can. Do not place it on any surface that others might touch. Do not come to work or class if you have any of the following symptoms:
- a sudden fever
- body aches and pains
- coughing
- fatigue
People who have swine flu may also experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and/or a runny nose and sore throat. The majority of the patients with this flu have reported that the symptoms are mild and they have recovered fully.
If students, family members, faculty and/or staff experience any of the symptoms of swine flu they should call their personal healthcare providers for guidance regarding evaluation and treatment. Additionally, please report any travel to Mexico within seven days of the onset of symptoms to the school nurse and your physician.
The school district is working with city, county and state health authorities on this matter. We will continue to monitor the situation here in the United States and in Mexico. If you would like more information about swine flu, please visit http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/
