RRISD students lead nation, state in SAT scores
Posted Date: 8/26/2009

Round Rock ISD students posted an average composite score of 1621 on the SAT this year, up from 1618 a year ago.

The average SAT test score for RRISD students was higher than the state average of 1467 and the national average of 1509. Approximately 42 percent of RRISD test takers were minority students, representing an increase of 3 percent over 2008. The strongest increase in performance was posted by SPHS students, where scores increased in all three subject areas, and average composite scores climbed from 1468 to 1497.

The district’s average score of 1621 breaks down to 563 in Math, 538 in Reading and 520 in Writing. Overall, RRISD students’ performance improved in both math and reading, but declined from 522 to 520 in writing. The SAT score range is 200-800 points in each category with a perfect score of 2400. The Writing test was added to the SAT in 2006.

“We are pleased to see our test scores increase in math and reading,” RRISD Superintendent Dr. Jesús Chávez said. “One of our district goals is to continue improving our student performance in math and our increased scores are reflective of our efforts. RRISD has consistently been above the state and national SAT average and we will strive to maintain this trend.”

The district saw 1,564 students take the SAT, down slightly from 1,625 in 2008. College Board officials noted that the major spring testing period occurred during the H1N1 flu outbreak when thousands of Texas students were ill. About 40 SAT testing sites in Texas were shut down due to the outbreak.
