Spicewood teachers, computer science students introduce coding to classrooms

hour-of-code-spicewood-fiTeachers at Spicewood Elementary School brought a special treat to students in all grade levels with Hour of Code exercises.

Along the way to being introduced to computer science, student also received a lesson in logic, problem solving and creative thinking through themed-games like zombies, “Frozen” and Angry Birds.

On Wednesday, Spicewood students participated in a Google Hangout with computer science students at Baylor University, asking questions about coding and computer programming.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Flores and Chief of Schools and Innovation Dr. Daniel Presley visited third grade class on Thursday morning to join the students in some coding.

Spicewood instructional technology specialist Julie Haney worked with teachers to organize coding for students grades K-5, along with special video announcements on coding for the morning, a photo contest and a Kids React Video Booth, where students recorded 30-second testimonials about their coding experience. The week of activities coincided with Code.org’s Hour of Code program that challenged schools and classrooms to spend one hour on a coding lesson as part of Computer Science Education Week.
