“It’s not always about how well I taught the students to use commas,” Visger said. “Sometimes it’s about making sure they know they are good enough just as they are.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]WB_TOY_PageCarrie Visger, who has taught fifth grade at Wells Branch Elementary School for two years, proclaims herself as a no-nonsense teacher who “tells it like it is.”

Using her straightforward style, Visger, who has been selected as the 2017 Teacher of the Year at Wells Branch, builds positive relationships with her students. She thinks of them as family and each day when she encounters her students, they know they matter, Visger said.

“It’s not always about how well I taught the students to use commas,” Visger said. “Sometimes it’s about making sure they know they are good enough just as they are.”

Visger has been a professional educator for eight years and holds herself accountable for her own professional development. Visger said she anonymously polls her students and challenges them to offer actionable feedback in which she can use to develop her craft.

“The way they are experiencing me matters, no matter how I am trying to be perceived,” Visger said.

Visger is also a licensed professional counselor, currently completing a postgraduate internship at SafePlace, a shelter that houses victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking.

“Carrie Visger leads and teaches from the heart always, “ Wells Branch Principal Belinda Cini said. “The caring and supportive relationships she builds with her students and colleagues are extraordinary.”

Visger credits her mother with inspiring her to teach and attributes her accolade as Teacher of the Year to her team of Wells Branch teachers and administrators.

“Our Wells Branch family is extraordinary,” Visger said. “They gave me this opportunity to come in and teach on a team that is phenomenal. I would not be Teacher of the Year without my wonderful, caring, supportive fellow fifth-grade educators and a loving and caring administration.”[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI1NjAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGODFuU0I4cDJlbGclMjIlMjBmcmFtZWJvcmRlciUzRCUyMjAlMjIlMjBhbGxvd2Z1bGxzY3JlZW4lM0UlM0MlMkZpZnJhbWUlM0U=[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]
