Cedar Ridge Salutatorian to attend UT Austin, study chemical engineering

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The key to success for Cedar Ridge High School Salutatorian Josh Tidman has been hard work, dedication and a little bit of luck.

Tidman, who will be continuing his education at the University of Texas at Austin studying chemical engineering, was relentless in his high school education, he said. But as the hard work has now paid off, Tidman is looking forward to making his mark in college and eventually impacting the environment.

“I’ll be studying an environmental engineering emphasis because for me, issues with the environment are the most pressing,” Tidman said. “I want to do what I can.”

Along with Cedar Ridge, Tidman also attended Forest Creek Elementary School and Ridgeview Middle School during his time in RRISD. Tidman served as the vice president of the National Honor Society and focused on film clubs outside of school where he wrote his own film reviews.

A love of learning and dedication began at Forest Creek in the classroom of Jon Coats, who was the talented and gifted specialist, Tidman said.

“He taught me how to be curious and I think that’s the most important thing a teacher can teach me,” Tidman said. “He went through Greek mythology and that was the first time I tried learning outside of class. That was a major stepping stone in developing who I am today.”

Tidman was always connected to literature and followed the story of The Odyssey closely, Coats said. Coats often reflects on The Odyssey, remembering the line: “It is the journey, not the destination that makes your life.”

“I think what struck me about Josh most was that he was true to himself and truly excited about learning,” Coats said. “I want Josh to know that I am so proud of him, but there needs to be time to look at where we are on our journey, and to be truly proud. There is no true destination, just an incredible journey.”[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/T8Z5HFMaWQw?list=PLE8IqSthAqE7ProzvO896CcFOzM7oxG51″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
