Success staff models healthy habits with campus wellness program

yogaThe staff at Success High School are making healthier choices. While in the process of taking better care of themselves, they serve as role models for students and expand their social and emotional instructional skills with a campus wellness initiative.

Counselors at Success High School organized relaxation and breathing seminars with Nirvana Gym of Austin. Representatives from the gym taught staff mindfulness skills including, diaphragmatic breathing also known as belly breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing is credited with lowering blood pressure, releasing serotonin, and eliminating free radicals.

“Building relationships and creating flexible personalized interventions and support for students is what we do best at Success,” Success Principal Thomasine Stewart said. “When we realized we didn’t have a plan in place for taking care of the adults that play an integral role in advising these students, my team met with the counselors to devise a plan to promote staff health.”

Success administration provided staff opportunities to seek out strategies and techniques from experts with coupons for wellness checks, with the school nurse and sessions with the coach. More program features include a campus weight-loss challenge, onsite Hatha yoga classes provided by Nirvana gym and a walking club.

“We have a staff member who is a runner and promotes a running club for students and organizes staff members to join in local running events and fundraisers.” Success Vice Principal Jerrod Gertsema said.

Staff uses the mindfulness skills and relaxation techniques they’ve learned as they help students cope with social or emotional challenges. With innovative staff training, Success has expanded student access to supportive innovative learning models while simultaneously creating a healthy benefit for staff.
