Elementary schools across the district opened their doors to families this week, welcoming grandparents and other loved ones for special luncheons honoring Grandparents Day.
At Voigt Elementary School, families gathered in the cafeteria to share a meal, celebrate tradition, and highlight the important role grandparents play in a student’s life.
Assistant principal Lourde Ventura-Rubio said events like these strengthen students’ sense of belonging and remind the school of the power of community.
“Creating these spaces and moments where families come together enriches our school in ways words cannot capture,” she said. “I was in awe to see so many wonderful families here, and my heart was filled from the incredible love and support the community shared with all of us today.”
That same spirit of connection was echoed by families throughout the cafeteria as grandparents brought smiles, hugs, and special treats like McDonald's chicken nuggets or a favorite stuffed animal as they visited their grandchildren.
“I was so excited to walk through the door and see my grandson in line,” said grandmother Julie Lampkin. “I wanted to see how he acts in school and how he is with his friends. I’ve really been looking forward to seeing him in his element.”
Lampkin said the luncheon was about making memories as her grandson begins his first year of school.
“I’m grateful I had the flexibility to come today. It’s so nice to simply be here with my grandbaby.”
The annual tradition not only gives grandparents a glimpse into their grandchild’s day-to-day school life but also reinforces our schools’ commitment to family involvement.
