The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program, including 111 students from Round Rock ISD.
Westwood High School, with 63 semifinalists, led the state in total semifinalists.
Senior, Aiden W., said being named among the 63 is an honor.
“It’s a reminder to me of all the support I’ve received from my teachers throughout all of elementary, middle, and high school. They’ve inspired me to learn and work hard,” he said.
These academically talented high school seniors represent the top scorers in the nation and now have the opportunity to compete for nearly $26 million in scholarships to be awarded next spring. To advance to the Finalist stage, Semifinalists must meet several academic and application requirements. Historically, about 95 percent of Semifinalists become Finalists, and roughly half of those earn a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar®.
“We are incredibly proud of our students who have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists,” Superintendent Hafedh Azaiez said. “This achievement reflects their dedication to academics and the support of their teachers and families. These students are leaders in the classroom and beyond, and we look forward to seeing the many ways they will continue to make an impact.”
Semifinalists have now advanced to apply for the finalist standing, which will be announced in February.
