Dear Round Rock ISD community,
It's wonderful to have our schools' classrooms and hallways filled again after the ice storm forced schools to close for a few days. We don't make the decision to close schools lightly. Our schools are safe, supportive spaces, and for some students, it's a place to have a trusted friend or staff member who regularly checks in on them. We also employ about 7,000 people who support their families working at our schools and facilities. However, the information we received from county officials and our operations teams made it clear that there was only one right choice.
I am overwhelmingly grateful to our district's first responders — our exceptional maintenance, operations, and law enforcement teams — who, despite treacherous conditions, worked tirelessly to safeguard our facilities and the people who depend on them. Kudos to our many teachers, administrators, and staff who pitched in to further clear sidewalks, pathways, and driveways.
McNeil and Stony Point High School FFA agriculture science students with livestock on campus also braved the inclement weather to care for their animals. Both schools have active FFA programs with on-site barn facilities, and rain, shine, or ice, these students ensure their animals receive the care and attention they need.
Just last week, several of these dedicated students earned top-five placements at the January Travis County Youth Livestock Show. I was incredibly proud to witness their leadership and sense of responsibility firsthand.
