Lilia Fernandez was named the Region 13 Star of the Month, an honor that highlights educators and support staff who demonstrate excellence, service and commitment to their school communities. Lilian, a custodian of nearly 22 years from Cedar Ridge High School, is being recognized for her dedication, leadership and behind-the-scenes impact on the campus community.
In that role, she oversees daily custodial operations for the campus, supports lunch service setup in the cafeteria and ensures facilities are prepared for district and community events.
Susan Cantu, senior administrative associate at Cedar Ridge, nominated Fernandez for the award.
“Lily is the most deserving person on this campus,” Cantu said. “Our facilities are always in high demand, and she makes sure every space is set up exactly as requested and ready to go. Her attitude is always positive, no matter how busy things get.”
Cantu said Fernandez’s work often happens behind the scenes but directly supports every program, event and school day on campus.
“She knows every square inch of this building and makes sure it is safe and taken care of for our staff and students,” Cantu said. “When we had an ice day recently, she was out shoveling the front walkway early in the morning so students could enter safely. She sees what needs to be done before anyone even has to ask.”
The Region 13 Star of the Month program recognizes any public school employee, including teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, administrators and coaches. Region 13 partners with local school districts each month to honor recipients for their impact and service.
Fernandez said she was surprised and grateful to receive the recognition.
“I did not expect this at all,” Fernandez said. “I love my job, and I try to give my best every day. It means a lot to know that people see the hard work we do.”
Fernandez said her motivation comes from pride in her work and her campus.
“I love what I do,” she said. “Every morning I come in ready to do my best.”
