Round Rock ISD had three high school student-artists receive the coveted Gold Seal Award at State VASE this year!

Annaleigh I. from Cedar Ridge High School, Izzy E P. from McNeil High School, and Erin K. Y. from Round Rock High School earned the state’s highest award for their visual artwork at the recent contest.

More than 30 high school students from throughout the district competed in State VASE this year, with more than 1,600 artworks submitted statewide.

Annaleigh said she was excited to be part of such a talented group of student-artists.

“At State VASE, it’s really cool to see how other people creatively express themselves in their artwork,” she said. “I remember I was so shocked when my art teacher, Miss B, gave me the Gold Seal Packet. The quality of work that Gold Seal recipients do is at a very high level. The fact that they chose my art alongside those is incredible, because achieving a Gold Seal felt so unreachable last year.  It makes me extremely happy to be recognized with such amazing artists.”

At the high school-level competition, several students from Cedar Ridge, McNeil, Round Rock and Westwood advanced to the State VASE competition from hundreds of entries across the district. Students are rescored from the first group at the VASE competition and receive a new rating of 1–5. A score of 5 is the highest distinction, meaning students also receive the highest accolade: the Gold Seal Award.

The district also had 368 entries in the Jr. VASE competitions this year, which focus on artworks from the middle school level. Of the 368 entries, 299 received the highest rating of 4; of that group, 32 received the platinum medal for artistic excellence.

Tim Lowke, fine arts director-visual, said he’s excited to have so many students participate this year.

“I'm extremely proud of all our student artists who participated in both Jr. VASE and VASE this season,” Lowke said. “Round Rock ISD Fine Arts had students from all our secondary campuses compete this year, with many who received high ratings and awards. That level of student success is a testament to our visual arts faculty, who share and facilitate excellence daily.

“To our three high school students who received a Gold Seal Award this year, we're excited to have you represent Round Rock ISD as your work is shown across Texas!
